Three herders have been killed in a violent attack by unidentified gunmen in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, escalating fresh security concerns in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
The incident, confirmed by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), reportedly occurred in a rural community within the troubled local government area. According to the association, the victims were attacked while carrying out their routine activities, though full details of the assault remain under investigation.
MACBAN Calls for Swift Justice
MACBAN officials condemned the killings and urged security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice. The group warned that recurring violence in Barkin Ladi and surrounding communities continues to heighten fear among pastoralist populations.
The association also appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives to intensify patrols in vulnerable rural corridors to prevent further loss of life.
Renewed Security Concerns in Barkin Ladi
Barkin Ladi, located in the volatile belt of Plateau, has witnessed repeated episodes of communal and armed violence over the years. Analysts say the latest killings underscore the fragile security situation in parts of the state, where farmer herder tensions, banditry, and reprisals have frequently intersected.
As of press time, authorities in Jos had yet to release an official statement detailing arrests or operational responses linked to the attack.
Calls for Calm
Community leaders and security observers have urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions while investigations proceed. Stakeholders continue to stress the need for sustained dialogue, intelligence-driven policing, and coordinated peacebuilding efforts to halt the cycle of violence in Plateau’s rural communities.
