Zamfara Security Boost: Defence Minister Says New APCs and Drones Will Strengthen Rapid Response!

Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan, Editor-in-Chief | Sele Media Africa

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has said newly acquired Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and surveillance drones provided by Dauda Lawal will significantly reinforce rapid response to security threats in Zamfara State.

Speaking during the unveiling of the security assets in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, the minister noted that the equipment would enhance operational effectiveness, improve intelligence gathering, and enable faster deployment of security personnel to high-risk areas. The assets form part of the state government’s broader efforts to address persistent insecurity, including banditry and rural violence affecting communities across the North-West region.

Governor Lawal procured approximately 25 Armoured Personnel Carriers alongside advanced surveillance drones to support military and security operations. The equipment is designed to improve troop protection, strengthen patrol capabilities, and provide aerial intelligence for coordinated responses to emerging threats.

According to Musa, the deployment of modern security assets reflects growing collaboration between federal and state authorities in tackling insecurity. He emphasized that while advanced equipment enhances operational capacity, effective security also depends on professionalism, accountability, and cooperation between security agencies and local communities.

Zamfara State has faced years of armed violence and banditry, disrupting livelihoods and limiting economic activity in many rural areas. The introduction of armored vehicles and aerial surveillance technology is expected to improve situational awareness and support more proactive security operations.

Security analysts note that subnational investment in logistics and surveillance technology is becoming an increasingly important component of Nigeria’s broader security architecture, particularly in regions experiencing asymmetric threats.
