Yahaya Bello Appears at APC Summit in Aso Rock Amid Ongoing ₦80bn Fraud Trial!

Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan, Editor-in-Chief | Sele Media Africa

Former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, on Tuesday attended a high-level summit of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, even as he continues to stand trial over allegations of an ₦80 billion fraud.

The political gathering, organised by the Progressives Governors Forum, brought together key stakeholders of the ruling party to deliberate on governance priorities and policy direction aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. The president attended the event as a special guest of honour, alongside senior party officials and governors.

Bello’s appearance at the summit comes amid his ongoing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which has charged him with multiple counts of money laundering involving the alleged diversion of about ₦80.2 billion in public funds during his tenure as governor from 2016 to 2024.

According to court proceedings, the anti-graft agency has presented witnesses and financial records in support of its case, alleging that funds linked to Kogi State accounts were routed through private entities and distributed via withdrawals and transfers. Bello has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The former governor’s participation in the APC summit has drawn public attention because of the contrast between his active role in party affairs and his ongoing legal battle. Analysts note that such appearances highlight the complex intersection of politics and judicial proceedings in Nigeria, where politically exposed persons may continue public engagements while facing trial, provided bail conditions are met.

The case remains one of the most closely watched corruption trials involving a former state governor in recent years, with proceedings continuing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
