X Announces Blue Checkmark Reforms Following €120M EU Fine Over Misleading Verification Practices!

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has unveiled plans to revise its blue checkmark verification system in the European Union after being hit with a €120 million (around $138 million) fine by the European Commission for breaching the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA). The penalty, issued in December 2025, marked the first enforcement under the landmark legislation and targeted multiple compliance failures on the platform.
A European Commission spokesperson confirmed that X has now submitted proposed remedies addressing concerns about its blue checkmark system, which regulators had deemed to feature a “deceptive design.” The Commission will evaluate whether these adjustments sufficiently resolve the DSA violations.
The ruling highlighted that X’s method of allowing users to purchase verification status without rigorous identity checks could mislead users regarding account authenticity, thereby violating transparency obligations. Additionally, the decision flagged other issues, including inadequate advertising transparency and restricted access for researchers to public platform data both key requirements under the DSA.
X’s reform proposals come amid heightened regulatory scrutiny, with EU authorities emphasizing that online platforms must not use design features that could confuse users about verified credentials. Failure to implement acceptable remedies could expose X to further fines or mandated corrective measures.
This development illustrates the expanding role of digital regulation in social media governance, particularly within the European Union, which continues to set global standards for platform accountability, transparency, and user protection.
