Woro Killings Expose Nigeria’s Rural Security Collapse – Hashim!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
The recent massacre in Woro community of Kwara State has been condemned by Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who described the violence as a stark reminder of Nigeria’s deepening rural security crisis.
According to reports, heavily armed assailants launched coordinated attacks on Woro and Nuku villages in Kaiama Local Government Area on 3–4 February 2026, killing scores of civilians, burning homes, and abducting villagers. Dr. Hashim emphasized that the attack reflects the vulnerability of rural communities and the failure of state protection.
In his statement, Hashim called the killings “unprecedented in scale and barbarity,” questioning the delayed response of security forces and the lack of aerial support despite available resources. He warned that the persistent insecurity risks eroding trust in state institutions and urged urgent reforms, including rapid-response units, forward operating bases in vulnerable areas, and enhanced surveillance.
The attacks have drawn national and international concern, prompting federal authorities to deploy military forces under Operation Savannah Shield. President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have visited the affected areas, pledging justice and increased security presence. The incident underscores Nigeria’s ongoing rural security challenges, as communities remain exposed to banditry, militancy, and extremist violence.
