Nigeria’s National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of more than 35 miners following the devastating Wase mine collapse, urging authorities to enforce stricter safety standards across mining operations nationwide.
In a statement released after the incident in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, the agency described the tragedy as a painful reminder of persistent safety lapses within Nigeria’s largely informal mining sector. The NOA extended condolences to the bereaved families and called for urgent reforms to prevent a recurrence.
Call for Stronger Oversight
The agency emphasised the need for rigorous enforcement of mining regulations, improved site monitoring, and mandatory use of protective equipment for workers. It warned that without decisive action, similar disasters could continue to claim lives, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining communities.
According to the NOA, stakeholders, including operators, regulators, and local authorities, must collaborate to strengthen compliance frameworks and ensure that mining activities meet nationally approved safety benchmarks.
Broader Safety Concerns
Mining accidents remain a recurring challenge in parts of Nigeria, where informal operations often operate outside full regulatory oversight. Safety experts say weak enforcement, inadequate training, and poor site management frequently contribute to deadly collapses.
The Wase incident has renewed national attention on the human cost of unsafe mining practices and the urgent need for systemic reforms in the sector.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the exact cause of the collapse, while families and communities in Plateau State mourn the victims.
