A video circulating widely across social media platforms has ignited a wave of debate about relationships, expectations, and modern dating culture after a mother advised her daughter to celebrate a “birthday” two months after meeting a new boyfriend in order to assess his generosity and commitment.

The clip, which has rapidly gained traction online, shows the woman explaining that whenever a woman meets a new partner, she should schedule a birthday celebration two months later regardless of her actual birth date to see “what he’s capable of doing.”

According to the woman in the video, the strategy helps a woman evaluate a partner’s willingness to invest in the relationship early on.

“When you meet a new boyfriend, your birthday should be two months after you meet him, no matter what time of the year it is,” she said. “That way, you will be able to know what he’s capable of doing.”

She further questioned the idea of waiting for an actual birthday date, suggesting that if a birthday had already passed before the relationship began, a woman might miss an opportunity to see how the new partner responds to celebratory expectations.

“So you will now say you want to wait for your real birthday? What about if your birthday don pass? So the new boyfriend no go come do anything for you?” she said in the video, speaking partly in Nigerian Pidgin English.

Social Media Reactions
The video has sparked intense conversation online, particularly on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, where thousands of users have weighed in with mixed reactions.

Some social media users described the advice as humorous or satirical, interpreting it as a commentary on material expectations in relationships. Others criticized the suggestion, arguing that it promotes manipulative behavior and transactional dating dynamics.

Relationship commentators who joined the discussion online noted that the viral clip reflects broader societal debates about financial responsibility, emotional investment, and authenticity in romantic partnerships.

Cultural Context and Public Discourse
In many parts of Africa, including Nigeria, discussions around dating expectations such as gifts, financial support, and displays of affection often play out publicly on social media. Viral videos and commentary frequently spark national conversations about gender roles, courtship norms, and the pressures associated with modern relationships.

Experts in social behavior say such viral moments often reveal deeper cultural tensions between traditional expectations and evolving perspectives on independence and partnership.

While the identity of the woman in the viral video has not been independently verified, the clip continues to circulate widely, fueling commentary from relationship advisers, social commentators, and everyday users across digital platforms.

Media Coverage
The viral video and the debate it generated have been reported by several Nigerian media outlets, including The Punch, Vanguard Nigeria, and Daily Post Nigeria, which highlighted the growing online discourse surrounding relationship expectations and viral parenting advice.

As conversations continue, the incident underscores the powerful role social media plays in amplifying everyday opinions into national debates about values, relationships, and cultural norms.
