Two United States Navy sailors were injured after a non-combat fire erupted aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN‑78) while the vessel was operating in the Red Sea, U.S. military officials confirmed on Thursday.
The blaze, which originated in the ship’s main laundry area on March 12, was quickly contained by the crew, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. The fire caused no damage to the carrier’s propulsion systems or critical mission capabilities and was not linked to combat operations.
Both sailors sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are reported to be in stable condition while receiving medical treatment. The Gerald R. Ford remains fully operational and continues its deployment as part of ongoing U.S. naval operations in the strategically important Red Sea corridor.
As the U.S. Navy’s most advanced and largest aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford plays a key role in regional maritime security amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The incident highlights the risks inherent to life aboard high-tempo naval deployments, even in the absence of combat. Fires on ships, regardless of their origin, represent some of the most serious onboard emergencies due to the confined environment and the potential threat to personnel and equipment.
The carrier’s ability to remain operational after the fire underscores the Navy’s rigorous damage-control protocols and fleet resilience, although the ship’s extended deployment and logistical complexities continue to draw scrutiny from military analysts.
