U.S. Republican Senator and longtime Israel ally, Lindsey Graham, has publicly cautioned against Israeli attacks on Iran’s oil facilities, warning that such operations could harm the Iranian populace and further destabilize global energy markets.
Graham’s comments followed reports of Israeli airstrikes targeting multiple fuel depots and oil-related installations near Tehran, signaling a marked escalation in the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict.
In a statement shared via social media, Graham urged Israeli authorities to carefully consider their military targets, noting that Iran’s oil sector will be crucial for national rebuilding if political change occurs.
“There will be a day soon when the Iranian people will be in charge of their own fate, not the murderous ayatollah’s regime,” Graham said. “In that regard, please be cautious about what targets you select… The oil economy of Iran will be essential to that endeavor.”
Rising Tensions in the Israel–Iran Conflict
Israeli strikes reportedly hit several fuel storage sites and refineries around Tehran, facilities believed to supply both civilian and military needs. Fires and thick smoke were observed across parts of the capital, while Iranian authorities confirmed damage to key infrastructure and reported casualties among workers. Emergency teams, however, contained the fires.
Energy infrastructure has historically been considered a high-risk target due to its potential to impact civilian life and global oil supply, making the strikes a notable shift in military tactics.
Strategic and Economic Implications
Experts warn that attacks on Iran’s energy assets could have far-reaching effects on global oil markets and exacerbate regional geopolitical tensions. With the Middle East supplying a significant share of the world’s crude oil, any disruption may influence international energy prices.
Reports suggest the Israeli strikes may have exceeded expectations within allied circles, highlighting emerging disagreements over the scale and targets of military operations. Despite these concerns, Washington continues to affirm Israel’s right to self-defense against perceived threats from Iran.
Regional and Global Consequences
The conflict has expanded across multiple fronts, with Iran responding through missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory and U.S.-linked sites in the Gulf region. This escalation raises the risk of a wider regional war and has prompted international calls for de-escalation.
Diplomatic observers note that differences among allied nations regarding military strategies particularly attacks on energy infrastructure could shape the next phase of the conflict, as global powers weigh military objectives against humanitarian and economic consequences.
