Shock and mourning have gripped Naka, the administrative headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, following the death of 29‑year-old Comfort Hajia Anura. Reports indicate she was attacked in January 2026 by a man described by residents as mentally unstable.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that Anura was struck with a large stick, sustaining severe injuries that led to her death. The alleged assailant was reportedly killed at the scene by local residents. Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the circumstances of his death.
The incident has ignited discussions on public safety and mental health support in rural communities. Friends and neighbours remembered Anura as a vibrant young woman whose sudden death has left her family and the wider community devastated.
Funeral arrangements have been announced, with burial scheduled for March 7, 2026, in her hometown of Tse‑Ashwe, Mbabija, Mbachohon, within Gwer West LGA.
This tragedy underscores ongoing security concerns in Benue State, an area that has periodically experienced communal clashes and herder-farmer conflicts. The Gwer West corridor, in particular, has been highlighted in national reports for its vulnerability to violence, with multiple communities previously affected by attacks and fatalities.
Community leaders and civil society groups are urging authorities at both the state and federal levels to implement stronger preventive measures and improve emergency responses. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and updates from law enforcement are expected.
