Africa, Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Taiwo Oyedele as Finance Minister of State, Magnus Abe as NUPRC ChairmanNigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to screen and confirm the appointments of fiscal policy expert Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance and former lawmaker Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).The nominations were conveyed in a letter transmitted to the Senate and read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, marking the latest move by the presidency to strengthen Nigeria’s economic management and energy sector oversight. Oyedele Nominated to Strengthen Fiscal and Tax Reform Agenda Oyedele, a respected economist and public policy specialist, currently serves as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. His nomination signals the administration’s continued focus on tax reform and fiscal restructuring as key pillars of Nigeria’s economic recovery strategy. Prior to his nomination, Oyedele spent more than two decades at the global consulting firm PwC, where he rose to become Africa Tax Leader and Fiscal Policy Partner. He has also contributed to academic and policy research as a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School. If confirmed, he will replace Dr. Doris Uzoka Anite, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as part of a cabinet adjustment within the administration. Nigeria Policy analysts note that Oyedele’s tax reform initiatives aim to simplify Nigeria’s complex tax environment by reducing the number of taxes across federal and state levels, while improving the country’s low tax to GDP ratio and strengthening revenue generation. Abe Nominated to Lead Nigeria’s Upstream Oil Regulator In a separate request to lawmakers, Tinubu also nominated Magnus Abe, a former senator who represented Rivers South-East, to serve as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. The commission plays a central role in regulating Nigeria’s upstream petroleum industry under the framework of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), overseeing licensing, exploration, and production activities in Africa’s largest oil producing economy. Alongside Abe’s nomination, the President also submitted the names of Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi and Mr. Sunday Adebayo Babalola to serve as non-executive commissioners of the regulatory body.Senate to Begin Screening Process Following the reading of the presidential communication, the nominations were referred to the relevant Senate committees for legislative screening and confirmation in accordance with Nigeria’s constitutional requirements for senior executive appointments. Political observers say the proposed appointments reflect the administration’s attempt to consolidate reforms across fiscal policy and the oil sector two critical pillars of Nigeria’s economic stability and long term development.
