President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police during an official ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decoration ceremony took place at the Presidentโs office inside the State House Abuja at approximately 4:00 p.m., in the presence of senior government officials and security chiefs. The event formally confirmed Disuโs assumption of duties as acting head of the police force following recent changes in the institutionโs leadership.
Disuโs appointment came shortly after the resignation of former Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, whose exit created a vacancy at the top of Nigeriaโs policing structure. His appointment is currently in an acting capacity pending confirmation by the appropriate authorities, in line with statutory procedures governing the office of the Inspector-General of Police.
During the ceremony, top officials in attendance included senior members of the presidency and the security establishment, underscoring the importance of continuity and stability in Nigeriaโs internal security framework.
Disu, a career police officer with decades of operational and intelligence experience, assumes leadership at a time when Nigeria faces evolving security challenges. Observers note that his tenureโif confirmedโwill be closely watched for reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism and public trust in the police.
His decoration signals the formal commencement of his role as Acting Inspector-General, placing him at the helm of Africaโs largest police institution by manpower and one of the continentโs most strategically significant security agencies.
