Sowore Leads Protest in Abia Demanding Release of Nnamdi Kanu, Activists Condemn Nigeria’s Political Establishment!

Prominent Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday led a protest in Abia State calling for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, as demonstrators accused Nigeria’s political elite of perpetuating injustice and suppressing dissent.

The protest, which drew civil society activists and supporters of Kanu’s release, took place in the southeastern state where demonstrators marched with placards and chanted slogans demanding an end to what they described as prolonged detention without resolution of the case.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and founder of the civic movement Take It Back Movement, criticized the Nigerian ruling class, accusing political leaders of undermining democratic rights and the rule of law.

“The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu represents a broader pattern of political repression,” Sowore told supporters during the protest. “Nigeria must demonstrate that justice and the rule of law apply equally to all citizens.”

Long-Running Legal and Political Controversy

Kanu, leader of the pro-Biafra group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been at the center of one of Nigeria’s most contentious political and legal disputes in recent years.

He was first arrested in 2015 on charges including treasonable felony related to his campaign for the secession of Nigeria’s southeastern region. After being granted bail in 2017, Kanu left Nigeria but was re-arrested in 2021 under controversial circumstances and returned to the country to face trial.

Nigeria’s federal government maintains that Kanu must answer to charges linked to alleged incitement and activities that authorities say threaten national security. The case has moved through multiple legal challenges and appeals.

Supporters and rights advocates, however, argue that the continued prosecution reflects political persecution and have repeatedly called for his release.

Growing Pressure From Civil Society

Activists at the Abia protest said the demonstration was part of a broader campaign to pressure the government to resolve the issue through legal or political means.

Sowore urged the Nigerian authorities to respect constitutional rights and judicial processes, warning that unresolved grievances could deepen political tensions in the country.

The call for Kanu’s release has become a rallying point for various advocacy groups across Nigeria and the diaspora, particularly in the Southeast where IPOB retains significant grassroots support.

Government Position

Officials of the Federal Government of Nigeria have consistently maintained that Kanu’s trial must proceed through the judicial system and have rejected calls for political intervention in the case.

Authorities have also designated IPOB as a terrorist organization, a classification the group and its supporters strongly dispute.

Analysts say the issue remains a sensitive political matter tied to broader debates about federalism, regional grievances, and political inclusion in Nigeria.

As protests and legal proceedings continue, observers say the outcome of Kanu’s case could have significant implications for Nigeria’s political stability and the management of separatist movements.
