Somalia’s President: “They tried to kill me six times” — Mohamud speaks out
Mogadishu — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has revealed that militant group Al-Shabaab has made six separate attempts on his life over the years. He made the disclosure following a recent bomb attack on his convoy in Mogadishu on March 18, 2025. [1]
The Latest Attack & Past Attempts
• The most recent assassination attempt involved a roadside bomb targeting the presidential convoy near Villa Somalia as the president was heading to the airport to inspect military operations. Somali officials confirmed he escaped the attack unhurt. [2]
• Mohamud stated that Al-Shabaab’s aim was to stop him from joining troops in the frontlines, but he called their plan “a failure.” [1]
• According to Mohamud, since 2014, the extremist group has repeatedly plotted to assassinate him through bombings, ambushes, and other covert operations. [1]
