With millions of Muslims preparing to celebrate Eid‑el‑Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, the Sokoto State Police Command has launched a robust security plan to guarantee peaceful festivities across the state. The initiative involves intensified patrols, strategic deployments, and intelligence-driven operations aimed at curbing criminal activity and safeguarding public spaces during the Sallah period.
In a statement released on March 18, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, highlighted that the command has activated a comprehensive security architecture to preempt crimes commonly associated with high-density holiday gatherings. Commissioner of Police Ahmed Musa extended warm greetings to the Muslim faithful, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly while adhering strictly to laws and public order protocols.
To reinforce security, the police directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to intensify both visible and covert patrols, especially in high-traffic zones such as mosques, marketplaces, motor parks, highways, and other gathering points. This strategic deployment aims to reassure residents, deter criminal elements, and maintain smooth public order throughout the festivities.
Key areas of focus include phone snatching, pickpocketing, traffic infractions, and other opportunistic crimes that tend to spike during holiday periods. Authorities emphasized that ensuring public safety requires proactive engagement with communities, and residents are urged to promptly report suspicious activities to nearby police stations or via the command’s control lines.
“The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies. Safety is a shared responsibility,” the statement read. Parents and guardians were also reminded to supervise children and wards to prevent incidents that could compromise festive safety.
Sokoto’s proactive security plan mirrors similar efforts across Nigeria. In Bauchi State, for instance, the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have deployed forces to prevent crimes such as sara‑suka violence, petty theft, and traffic violations, reinforcing nationwide efforts to guarantee holiday tranquility.
This initiative comes amid enduring security challenges in north-west Nigeria, where communities have faced banditry, kidnappings, and militia attacks. Incidents such as the 2025 Kwallajiya raid in Sokoto highlighted vulnerabilities in rural areas, prompting calls for more effective coordination between law enforcement, community leaders, and local security groups.
By combining visible policing with intelligence operations and community collaboration, Sokoto State aims to mitigate risks, prevent disruptions, and provide a secure environment for residents and worshippers. The strategy underscores the state police’s commitment to ensuring that Eid‑el‑Fitr is observed in an atmosphere of peace, unity, and collective civic responsibility.
As the festive prayers approach, authorities reiterate that citizens play an integral role in sustaining safety, emphasizing vigilance, adherence to law, and cooperation with security forces. Sokoto’s preparations highlight how meticulous planning and community engagement are essential in maintaining order during major religious celebrations across Nigeria.
