Followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) staged protests across Niger State on Sunday following unverified reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli operation news that has ignited concern and solidarity demonstrations among Shiite communities worldwide.
Dozens of demonstrators, many affiliated with the IMN and inspired by ideological ties with Tehran, marched through urban centres carrying Iranian flags and placards reading “We Stand With Iran” and “Free Iran.” Protesters chanted anti-Western and anti-Israeli slogans, describing the alleged killing as an act of “global injustice and imperial aggression.”
While Iranian state media and multiple international outlets reported Khamenei’s death, it has not been independently confirmed by recognized global authorities. Nonetheless, social media and regional news coverage of the event has sparked demonstrations beyond the Middle East.
Participants in Niger State expressed grief and solidarity with Iran’s Shiite population, highlighting the deep transnational religious and political connections that shape IMN activism. Supporters reiterated their loyalty to the Iranian people’s struggle, condemning perceived Western interference in sovereign affairs.
The protests come amid widespread global unrest over the reported killing. Demonstrations and clashes have been reported in Pakistan, India’s Kashmir region, Iraq, and other countries with significant Shiite populations. In Karachi, Pakistan, protests near the U.S. Consulate reportedly turned violent, resulting in multiple casualties.
Historically led by figures such as Ibrahim El‑Zakzaky, the IMN has a long record of public demonstrations and political activism linked to international Shiite causes. Sunday’s protests in Niger State underscore the enduring religio-political affinities between Nigerian Shiites and global Shiite communities.
