Ondo Police Clarify Akure Airport Arrests, Say Suspects Were Kidnappers’ Suppliers — Not Bandits!

Authorities in southwestern Nigeria have clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of four suspects near the airport in Akure, stating that the individuals were not armed bandits as initially suggested but suspected suppliers to kidnapping networks.
The clarification came from the Ondo State Police Command, which refuted earlier reports indicating that bandits had been apprehended at the airport. The command explained that the suspects were arrested in connection with logistical support allegedly provided to kidnappers operating in parts of the state.
Earlier reports had circulated following a statement attributed to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), suggesting that four bandits were apprehended at the Akure Airport in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. The report sparked widespread concern on social media and across Nigerian news platforms, raising fears about the potential infiltration of airport facilities by armed criminal groups.
However, the police command quickly moved to correct the narrative.
According to police officials, the suspects were intercepted during a security operation around the airport vicinity, but they were not bandits and were not arrested inside the airport facility. Instead, investigators believe the individuals were part of a supply chain providing food, fuel, and other logistical items to kidnapping gangs operating in forested areas of the state.
Police authorities emphasized that the arrest followed intelligence led surveillance conducted by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with local security operatives.
“The suspects are not bandits,” a police spokesperson explained while addressing journalists. “They are individuals suspected of supplying materials and provisions to kidnappers hiding in remote areas. Their arrest occurred near the airport axis during routine intelligence operations.”
The clarification underscores the increasing complexity of criminal networks involved in kidnapping across several regions of Nigeria, where logistical supporters and informants often play critical roles in sustaining criminal groups.
Security analysts say such supply networks have become an essential component of kidnapping operations, enabling armed groups to remain concealed in forests and rural hideouts for extended periods. These networks often include transporters, food vendors, informants, and intermediaries who facilitate the movement of supplies or intelligence.
Ondo State has faced intermittent security challenges in recent years, particularly related to kidnappings along highways and within forest reserves that stretch across parts of the state and neighboring regions. Authorities have intensified operations targeting both armed criminals and the civilian support systems believed to enable them.
The Ondo State Police Command stressed that investigations into the suspects are ongoing and that further arrests could follow if evidence links additional individuals to the alleged supply chain.
Officials also reassured residents and travelers that security around Akure Airport remains intact and that airport operations have not been compromised. According to authorities, the airport itself was never infiltrated by armed bandits, contrary to early interpretations of the initial report.
The clarification highlights the importance of accurate information in security related reporting, particularly in regions where public anxiety around banditry and kidnapping remains high.
Across Nigeria, law enforcement agencies have been working to dismantle not only armed groups but also the broader support networks that sustain them. Security experts argue that targeting suppliers, financiers, and collaborators is a critical step toward weakening kidnapping syndicates.
For residents of Ondo State, the police statement provides reassurance that the situation around Akure Airport remains under control. Nevertheless, the incident also reflects the broader challenge faced by Nigerian security agencies in tackling evolving criminal structures that operate beyond traditional armed banditry.
Authorities say public cooperation and timely intelligence remain essential in confronting these threats.
