Nigeria’s Aso Rock Set to Exit National Grid in March, Transition Fully to Solar Power Three Years After Tinubu’s Electricity Pledge!

Reported by Musa Antiketu (Journalist) | Sele Media Africa

The Nigerian presidency is preparing to disconnect the Aso Rock Presidential Villa from the national electricity grid and transition entirely to solar power by the end of March, marking a significant shift in energy sourcing at the seat of power.
The planned move comes nearly three years after Bola Ahmed Tinubu pledged to deliver stable and reliable electricity to Nigerians through reforms in the country’s power sector.
According to government officials familiar with the plan, the Presidential Villa in Abuja will rely on a dedicated solar power system designed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for the complex, which houses the president’s office, residence, and key administrative facilities.
Push for Energy Independence
Sources within the presidency indicate that the solar project forms part of broader efforts to reduce dependence on Nigeria’s fragile national grid, which has suffered multiple collapses and chronic supply shortages over the years.
The grid, which distributes electricity across Nigeria, has faced persistent infrastructure challenges, generation shortfalls, and transmission bottlenecks. These issues have forced households, businesses, and government institutions to rely heavily on alternative energy sources such as diesel generators and increasingly, solar power.
By transitioning to solar energy, officials say the Presidential Villa aims to guarantee uninterrupted power supply while also reducing long term operational costs associated with diesel consumption and grid instability.
Symbolic and Policy Implications
Energy analysts note that the decision carries both symbolic and practical implications.
On one hand, it highlights the growing adoption of renewable energy solutions in Nigeria amid the country’s ongoing electricity crisis. On the other, critics argue that the move underscores the urgency of accelerating reforms in the national power sector to ensure that reliable electricity reaches ordinary Nigerians.
President Tinubu’s administration has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to power sector reforms, including expanding generation capacity, improving transmission infrastructure, and encouraging private sector participation in renewable energy.
However, millions of Nigerians continue to experience intermittent electricity supply, with businesses and households spending significant amounts on alternative power sources.
Renewable Energy Momentum in Nigeria
Nigeria has increasingly explored renewable energy options, particularly solar power, as part of its long term energy transition strategy. With abundant sunlight across much of the country, solar energy is widely viewed as one of the most viable solutions to bridge the electricity deficit.
Several government backed and private solar initiatives have emerged in recent years, targeting rural electrification, mini grid development, and off grid solutions for communities not connected to the national grid.
The planned solar transition at the Presidential Villa may further amplify conversations around renewable energy adoption, energy security, and sustainable power solutions in Africa’s largest economy.
