Leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have clarified the nature of their recent closed-door discussions with President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that the meeting focused on advancing electoral reforms to ensure credible and transparent elections in Nigeria’s 2027 general polls.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by senior representatives from both SDP and IPAC. Contrary to speculations circulating in some quarters, party officials stressed that the discussions were consultative rather than political, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and promoting fairness in the electoral process.

Speaking to the press following the engagement, SDP National Chairman affirmed the party’s commitment to constructive collaboration with the federal government and other stakeholders. “Our dialogue with President Tinubu was centred on reforms that will enhance electoral integrity and voter confidence across the country,” he said.

IPAC leadership echoed this position, noting that the forum offered an opportunity to identify actionable steps to reduce electoral disputes and bolster public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They highlighted plans to engage civil society organizations, political parties, and electoral experts to contribute to a more transparent 2027 electoral process.

Political analysts have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a proactive step toward addressing perennial challenges in Nigeria’s election system, including vote manipulation, delayed results, and inadequate voter education. Some observers, however, have cautioned that sustained follow-up and bipartisan cooperation will be critical to translating discussions into meaningful reforms.

The meeting underscores growing calls for comprehensive electoral reform in Nigeria, a country with a history of contested polls and democratic volatility. Both SDP and IPAC have reiterated that their engagement with the presidency is part of a broader national effort to safeguard democratic norms and ensure that the 2027 elections reflect the genuine will of the Nigerian electorate.
