Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has called on officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to strengthen discipline, unity, and selfless service during the holy month of Ramadan, while acknowledging the sacrifices troops make daily in defending the nation.
Speaking during an Iftar gathering with Muslim personnel, the army chief emphasized that the spiritual lessons of Ramadan including self-restraint, compassion, and devotion should inspire soldiers to reinforce solidarity within the military and deepen their commitment to national security.
Oluyede noted that the fasting period offers a moment for reflection and moral renewal, urging troops to embody the virtues of sacrifice and collective responsibility in the course of their duties. According to him, the principles of Ramadan closely align with the core values of the Nigerian Army, particularly discipline, unity, and unwavering service to the nation.
“From the virtues of fasting, we should strive to become better Nigerians, committed to building a safer and more secure country while fostering love and understanding among ourselves,” the army chief said.
Army Chief Recognises Sacrifices of Deployed Troops
The Chief of Army Staff also commended soldiers deployed across various operational theatres for their dedication and resilience, noting that many personnel remain on active duty far from their families during the holy month in order to protect communities from security threats.
Nigeria continues to confront multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and communal violence in parts of the North-Central region. Against this backdrop, Oluyede stressed that the professionalism and commitment of Nigerian soldiers remain vital to safeguarding national stability and protecting civilian populations.
He further urged military commanders to pay close attention to the welfare of troops and their families, stressing that strong internal support systems within the armed forces are essential for sustaining morale and operational effectiveness.
Strengthening Camaraderie and Professionalism
Highlighting the importance of camaraderie, Oluyede encouraged officers and soldiers to see themselves as members of a unified institution bound by duty to the country. He emphasized that mutual respect, mentorship, and cooperation across ranks are critical to maintaining professionalism and discipline within the military.
According to him, fostering unity within the armed forces not only strengthens internal cohesion but also enhances the Nigerian Army’s ability to respond effectively to evolving security threats nationwide.
The Ramadan message, he added, should encourage soldiers to renew their commitment to patriotism, discipline, and collective responsibility in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Faith, Morale and National Security
Military leadership in Nigeria has increasingly highlighted the importance of ethical values, troop welfare, and institutional unity in strengthening the armed forces’ response to complex security challenges.
The Ramadan engagement with troops forms part of broader efforts by the army leadership to reinforce motivation, professionalism, and morale among personnel serving across the country’s various conflict zones.
As Nigeria continues to navigate evolving security dynamics, the army chief reiterated that the dedication of soldiers many of whom remain on the frontlines during religious and national holidays remains central to the country’s pursuit of peace, stability, and national security.
