PDP Leadership Rift Deepens as Makinde Supports Wike Peace Accord While Bala Mohammed Rejects Deal!

Internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have intensified following diverging positions taken by two prominent governors over a proposed reconciliation agreement with the political camp of Nyesom Wike.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed support for the emerging peace arrangement aimed at resolving the protracted leadership dispute within the opposition party. However, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has rejected the proposed accord, exposing a widening divide among party stakeholders.
The disagreement follows the aftermath of a recent decision by the Court of Appeal (Nigeria), which has reshaped the internal dynamics of the PDP leadership contest and triggered renewed negotiations among competing factions within the party.
Makinde Backs Reconciliation Efforts
Governor Makinde has reportedly endorsed efforts to restore unity in the PDP by supporting a compromise arrangement involving allies of Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Political observers say Makinde’s position reflects the view held by some party leaders that reconciliation is necessary to reposition the PDP as a credible opposition force ahead of future elections.
The Oyo governor has consistently advocated dialogue among party leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize institutional stability over factional rivalry.
Bala Mohammed Rejects Proposed Deal
In contrast, Governor Bala Mohammed has publicly distanced himself from the proposed settlement, arguing that any reconciliation must align with the party’s constitution and the collective decisions of its national leadership structures.
Mohammed, who also chairs the influential Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, warned that arrangements perceived to favour one faction could deepen mistrust within the party.
Analysts say the differing stances between Makinde and Mohammed highlight broader tensions within the PDP as it struggles to rebuild cohesion following internal disagreements that emerged before and after Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.
A Party Navigating Internal Divisions
The PDP has faced a prolonged leadership crisis involving disputes over party structure, influence, and strategic direction. The influence of Nyesom Wike once a leading PDP governor and now a prominent member of the federal cabinet remains a central factor in the party’s internal calculations.
Political analysts note that divisions among PDP governors and national leaders could complicate ongoing reconciliation efforts unless a broad consensus is reached.
As discussions continue, party members and observers are closely watching whether the PDP leadership can successfully broker a compromise that restores unity and strengthens its role as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
