Passionate Teachers and Strong Moral Values Drive Student Excellence, Says Vine Crest College Founder!

The founder of Vine Crest College, educationist Folashade Oluwatoyin Phillips, has highlighted the pivotal role of passionate teachers, disciplined learning environments, and strong character development in achieving sustained academic success among students.
Speaking on the philosophy guiding the institution, Phillips emphasized that education should extend beyond academic instruction to include the deliberate moulding of students’ character, leadership capacity, and social responsibility.
According to the seasoned school administrator, committed educators remain the cornerstone of a thriving academic community. She noted that when teachers approach their work with dedication and a genuine passion for nurturing young minds, students are more likely to excel both academically and personally.
Phillips, who has spent more than four decades in the education sector, explained that schools flourish when they maintain manageable student populations, provide purpose-built learning facilities, and cultivate a culture of discipline and close supervision. Such conditions, she said, allow educators to give individual attention to students while promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.
Building Character Alongside Academic Achievement
At the heart of Vine Crest College’s educational model is a strong emphasis on values such as compassion, service, leadership, and integrity. Phillips said these principles are intentionally woven into the school’s academic and extracurricular programmes to prepare students for responsible roles in society.
She stressed that academic excellence alone is not sufficient in today’s rapidly evolving world. Instead, schools must strive to produce well-rounded individuals who possess both intellectual ability and strong moral character.
“Education should shape how students think, behave, and contribute to society,” she said, adding that a value driven educational approach equips learners with the resilience and ethical grounding required to navigate complex global challenges.
A Vision for Holistic Education
Founded with the goal of nurturing “thought and action leaders,” Vine Crest College combines academic rigor with leadership training and character formation. The institution’s curriculum integrates Nigerian and international learning frameworks, while co-curricular activities including debate, arts, sports, and community engagement aim to develop students’ creative and social skills.
Phillips believes that the future of education in Africa lies in schools that prioritize holistic development where students graduate not only with strong examination results but also with the values and leadership skills needed to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
Education experts broadly agree that teacher dedication and value driven learning environments significantly influence student outcomes, reinforcing the importance of investing in both teacher development and student character formation.
As African education systems continue to evolve, Phillips argues that institutions must remain committed to producing graduates who embody academic excellence, integrity, and a sense of service to society.
