Oyo Government Trains 116 Agricultural Extension Officers on Digital Mapping App to Strengthen Tractor Subsidy Programme!

The government of Oyo State has trained 116 agricultural extension agents and monitoring officers on the use of a digital mapping application designed to enhance transparency, monitoring, and efficiency within the state’s tractorisation subsidy initiative.
The capacity-building programme forms part of efforts by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde to modernise agricultural support systems and boost food production across the state.
Officials said the training equips extension personnel with technical skills to deploy a geo-mapping application that tracks farm locations, monitors tractor deployment, and documents beneficiaries of the government’s Tractorisation Subsidy Programme.
Digital Tools to Improve Agricultural Oversight
According to the state government, the mapping application will allow field officers to capture real-time data from farms benefiting from the tractor subsidy scheme, improving transparency in the allocation and usage of agricultural equipment.
Agricultural extension agents play a critical role in bridging the gap between government programmes and farmers by providing technical guidance, monitoring farm activities, and facilitating access to mechanised farming services.
By digitising monitoring processes, the Oyo government aims to reduce administrative bottlenecks and ensure that mechanisation support reaches genuine smallholder farmers across rural communities.
Strengthening Food Production and Accountability
Officials say the tractor subsidy programme is part of broader efforts to expand agricultural productivity in Oyo State, which remains one of Nigeria’s key farming regions producing crops such as maize, cassava, and vegetables.
The introduction of digital tracking systems is expected to improve accountability in government-supported farming initiatives while providing policymakers with reliable data to guide agricultural planning.
Development experts note that integrating technology into agricultural extension services can significantly enhance farm management, resource allocation, and productivity outcomes, particularly in states seeking to scale up mechanised agriculture.
Agriculture at the Centre of State Development
The Makinde administration has repeatedly emphasised agriculture as a strategic sector for economic growth, rural employment, and food security.
With Nigeria facing rising food demand and supply chain pressures, state-level initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and improving mechanisation are increasingly seen as critical to strengthening the country’s agricultural value chains.
Officials say the newly trained extension agents will now be deployed across farming clusters in Oyo State to support farmers, monitor programme implementation, and ensure that the tractor subsidy scheme delivers measurable impact.
