Over 180 Communities Taken Off National Grid, Now Enjoy 24-Hour Solar Power – BagoBy Enock Damidami, Sele Media AfricaThe Niger State Government has formally broken the monopoly of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) following the domestication of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) law, a move aimed at liberalising electricity distribution and expanding renewable energy access across the state.Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago stated that the domestication of the regulatory framework has enabled the state to initiate a joint venture to establish a new electricity distribution company to compete with AEDC.He explained that his administration has intensified investment in alternative energy sources, particularly solar systems and mini-grids, to reduce dependence on the national grid. Government House in Minna, the General Hospital, IBB Specialist Hospital, the State Water Board, and several other public institutions have already transitioned to 24-hour solar-powered electricity.Governor Bago further revealed that more than 180 communities that had remained without power supply for over a decade are now connected to solar mini-grids, guaranteeing uninterrupted electricity. Lambata town in Gurara Local Government Area was cited as one of the communities benefiting from constant solar-powered electricity. He noted that the renewable energy initiative has significantly reduced the cost burden associated with conventional grid expansion, including the procurement of poles, wires, and other distribution infrastructure. Plans are underway to migrate more Ministries, Departments, and Agencies from the national grid in the near future.Governor Bago urged residents to embrace renewable energy solutions, describing them as efficient, reliable, and cost-effective, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustainable power supply across Niger State.
