Political momentum is building in Osun State as campaign activities officially begin for the August 15 governorship election, with incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke and Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) both expressing strong optimism about securing victory at the polls.
Governor Adeleke, who is seeking re-election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has highlighted his administration’s achievements in infrastructure development, education, and social welfare as key pillars of his campaign message.
Speaking at the launch of campaign activities, the governor said his administration remains focused on consolidating ongoing projects while expanding development programmes across the state.
“Our government has prioritised people-centred development, and we are confident that the electorate will judge us based on our performance,” Adeleke said, urging supporters to mobilise peacefully throughout the campaign period.
APC Candidate Signals Strong Challenge
Meanwhile, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji has also expressed confidence that voters will support his party’s platform in the forthcoming election.
Oyebamiji, a former Commissioner for Finance in Osun State, said the APC is prepared to present an alternative development vision centred on fiscal discipline, economic growth, and improved governance.
He emphasised that the election presents an opportunity for voters to reassess the state’s leadership direction and choose what he described as a “renewed pathway to sustainable development.”
Political observers note that the contest between the incumbent PDP administration and the APC challenger is expected to be closely watched, given Osun’s history of highly competitive governorship elections.
INEC Signals Start of Official Campaigns
The commencement of campaigns follows the timeline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which regulates election activities across Nigeria.
INEC has repeatedly urged political parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns in accordance with electoral guidelines and to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could threaten public order.
Civil society groups and election monitors have also called on political actors to prioritise issue-based campaigns focused on governance, economic opportunities, and social development in the state.
Key Test for Political Parties
Analysts say the Osun governorship election will serve as an important political test for both the PDP and the APC, two dominant parties competing for influence in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
With several months of campaigning ahead, voters in Osun State are expected to closely scrutinise policy proposals, leadership records, and campaign messaging from the major contenders before casting their ballots on August 15.
