Opinion: If Not for Insecurity, Tinubu Would Be Nigeria’s Most Impactful Infrastructure President!

Opinion: If Not for Insecurity, Tinubu Would Be Nigeria’s Most Impactful Infrastructure PresidentBy Enock Damidami from Sele Media Africa

Since assuming office in May 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shown strong commitment toward improving Nigeria’s infrastructure. Across the country, there has been renewed attention on roads, railways, energy, and coastal development projects aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity. One of the most ambitious initiatives is the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, a massive road network expected to connect several states along Nigeria’s southern corridor while improving transportation and trade. The administration has also continued work on major railway and highway projects that are critical to national development. However, the persistent challenge of insecurity continues to cast a shadow over these efforts. In many parts of the country, banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency—particularly those linked to groups such as Boko Haram—have slowed construction activities, increased the cost of projects, and discouraged contractors from operating in certain areas. If Nigeria were enjoying a more stable security environment, the pace of infrastructure delivery under Tinubu could arguably be much faster and more visible nationwide. Infrastructure thrives in an atmosphere of stability, where workers can operate freely and investments are protected.Supporters of the administration believe that despite the challenges, Tinubu’s focus on long-term infrastructure development shows a strategic vision for Nigeria’s future. They argue that once security improves, the scale of ongoing projects may place his administration among the most transformative in terms of national infrastructure. For now, the success of these initiatives will depend not only on government commitment but also on the country’s ability to address the security challenges that continue to hinder progress.
