Suspected bandits have killed a traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Jacob Falodun, during a failed abduction attempt in Ondo State, intensifying concerns over insecurity in rural communities across southwestern Nigeria.
The monarch, who ruled the Agamọ community in Akure North Local Government Area, was reportedly attacked by armed men who stormed his residence in the evening hours and attempted to abduct him. According to police accounts, the assailants forcibly took the monarch from his compound before he was later found dead with gunshot wounds a short distance away.
Authorities confirmed that security operatives, including tactical police teams and local security outfits, were deployed to comb surrounding areas in search of the perpetrators. The police say investigations are ongoing and have urged residents to provide credible information that could aid the manhunt.
Local sources indicated that multiple armed attackers were involved in the operation, which appeared to be a coordinated kidnapping attempt that turned fatal when the monarch resisted. The incident has triggered fear and outrage within the community, where residents have called for increased security presence.
The killing underscores persistent security challenges in parts of Ondo State, where rural settlements have faced recurring attacks by armed groups in recent years. Community leaders warn that traditional rulers, often seen as custodians of local authority, have increasingly become targets of abduction and violent crime.
Police authorities have pledged to bring those responsible to justice, assuring the public that intensified surveillance and security operations are underway to prevent further attacks.
