A traditional ruler in Ondo State, Oba Kehinde Falodun, has been killed after suspected gunmen stormed his palace in Agamo community, located in Akure North Local Government Area. The late monarch, the Alagamo of Agamo, was reportedly attacked on Wednesday night in what authorities believe was a failed abduction attempt.
According to multiple reports, armed men invaded the palace and attempted to kidnap the monarch. When he resisted, the attackers allegedly shot at him before inflicting fatal injuries. His body was later found a short distance from the palace, prompting an immediate security response and a manhunt for the suspects.
Local sources cited by media outlets claimed the attackers initially opened fire during the confrontation. Some accounts suggested that after the shooting, the monarch was struck with a weapon. However, authorities have not officially confirmed details surrounding the nature of his injuries beyond confirming his death.
Police authorities in Ondo State said tactical teams were deployed to the area shortly after the attack, working alongside local security outfits to track down the perpetrators. Officials also appealed to residents to remain calm and provide information that could aid ongoing investigations.
Rising Attacks on Traditional Rulers
The killing has heightened concerns over the safety of traditional rulers in parts of Nigeria, where monarchs have increasingly become targets of kidnapping and violent attacks. Analysts say traditional leaders are often targeted because of their perceived influence and the assumption that communities or families may be able to pay ransom demands.
Recent incidents in Ondo and other states highlight a broader pattern of insecurity affecting rural communities and traditional institutions. Security experts warn that attacks on monarchs can destabilise local governance structures and deepen fear among residents.
Community in Mourning
Residents of the Agamo community described the attack as shocking, noting that the monarch played a significant role in local leadership and conflict resolution. Community leaders have called for increased security presence and stronger intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
Police say investigations are ongoing and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice
