Ogun to Vaccinate 2.9 Million Children Against Measles, Rubella

The Ogun State Government has announced plans to vaccinate over 2.9 million children across the state against measles and rubella, as part of the national integrated measles and rubella campaign scheduled to begin in January 2026. The exercise targets children aged 9 months to 5 years, regardless of their previous vaccination status. Dr. Tomi Coker, the state’s Commissioner for Health, made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, saying the campaign would cover all 20 local government areas. She emphasized that the effort is in line with national and global strategies to reduce child mortality and eliminate measles and rubella by 2030. The campaign will be supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). Dr. Coker urged parents, caregivers, and community leaders to cooperate and ensure that all eligible children are presented for vaccination. “Vaccination remains the most cost-effective way to protect our children from these deadly but preventable diseases,” she stated, warning that measles continues to be a leading cause of vaccine-preventable deaths in Nigeria.Mobile teams and fixed vaccination posts will be deployed to schools, markets, churches, mosques, and health facilities to ensure full coverage.
