Ogun 2027: Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello Targets History as Nigeria’s First Elected Female Governor!

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared her ambition to become Nigeria’s first elected female governor, as she intensifies her bid for the governorship of Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a media interaction in Abeokuta, the former senator said her aspiration is rooted in a belief that Ogun State is well-positioned to make history by electing a woman as governor. She expressed confidence that her political experience and grassroots connections would strengthen her candidacy ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Obasanjo-Bello, who previously represented Ogun Central in the Senate and served as Commissioner for Health in the state, recently returned to partisan politics after years in academia and public policy. Her entry into the APC and renewed political engagement have fueled speculation about a competitive race for the party’s governorship ticket.
She emphasized that women’s leadership is not unfamiliar in Ogun’s history, arguing that the state’s educational and socio-political development makes it a strong contender to lead Nigeria in electing a female governor. According to her, the ambition aligns with broader efforts to expand women’s representation in leadership and governance across the country.
Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor since the return to democratic rule in 1999, despite increased political participation by women. Observers say Obasanjo-Bello’s declaration adds a significant gender dimension to the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Her campaign is expected to focus on economic development, job creation, education reform, and industrial expansion in Ogun State, themes she described as central to improving livelihoods and strengthening the state’s competitiveness.
