The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has officially restored full operations on the strategic Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor following a disruption earlier this week. The Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed on Wednesday that the rail service has resumed normal operations, accompanied by strengthened safety and operational protocols to reassure passengers.

The disruption occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, when a technical irregularity affected one of the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) units near Asham Station. Reports indicate that a locomotive detached from its train, colliding with trailing coaches. Emergency responders acted swiftly to assist passengers. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and all injured passengers received prompt medical attention.

In a statement shared on X, Opeifa highlighted the NRC’s immediate response: “Following the incident on Monday, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.” He added that enhanced safety measures have been implemented, including intensified technical inspections, emergency preparedness drills, and improved real-time monitoring to prevent future disruptions.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line is a crucial artery linking the Federal Capital Territory to Kaduna State, facilitating efficient movement of thousands of commuters weekly and serving as a safer alternative to road travel. The NRC’s swift restoration underscores its commitment to operational reliability and passenger welfare. Full services resumed Wednesday morning from Idu Station in Abuja to key stops along the route, including Rigasa in Kaduna State, with schedules operating as planned.

Monday’s incident has prompted wider discussions on rail safety across Nigeria. Past challenges, including technical failures and infrastructure maintenance concerns, have drawn scrutiny from regulatory authorities and lawmakers. The Senate has previously called for thorough assessments of Nigeria’s rail safety standards to ensure that long-distance routes, such as Abuja–Kaduna, meet international benchmarks.

The 186.5-kilometre Abuja–Kaduna rail line remains a vital transport link, integral to regional trade and daily commuting. Since commissioning, it has occasionally experienced operational setbacks, highlighting the ongoing need for rigorous safety management. NRC officials stressed that the safety protocols adopted following this week’s incident are designed to build passenger confidence and sustain uninterrupted service.

Passengers are encouraged to monitor official NRC channels for updated timetables, advisories, and safety announcements as the service returns to normalcy. The corporation reaffirmed its dedication to providing secure, reliable, and comfortable journeys along one of Nigeria’s most critical rail corridors.
