Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC) has firmly denied allegations that senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force paid ₦5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), describing the claims as false and damaging to the integrity of the promotion process.

In a statement issued by the Commission, officials rejected reports circulating in sections of the media and on social platforms that suggested officers were required to pay large sums to influence their elevation to the ACP rank. The PSC stressed that promotions within the police are conducted strictly through established procedures and merit-based assessments.

According to the Commission, the allegations misrepresent the role and conduct of the body responsible for overseeing appointments, promotions, and discipline within the Nigeria Police Force. The PSC emphasized that it operates within a transparent framework guided by law and institutional regulations.

“The Commission has never demanded or received any payment from officers seeking promotion,” the statement said, warning that such claims could undermine public confidence in police reforms and institutional accountability.

Commission Weighs Legal Response
The PSC further disclosed that it is considering legal action against individuals or groups responsible for spreading the bribery allegations, arguing that the claims amount to defamation and could erode trust in the country’s security institutions.

Officials noted that the Commission remains committed to strengthening professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly as the country continues to pursue broader policing reforms aimed at improving public trust and operational efficiency.

Promotion Transparency Under Scrutiny
Promotions within the Nigeria Police Force often attract public attention due to their impact on leadership structure and operational command across the country. The rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police is a key management position responsible for supervising divisions and shaping operational strategies.

In recent years, Nigeria’s security institutions have faced increasing calls for transparency, merit-based advancement, and institutional accountability as part of broader governance reforms.

By rejecting the bribery allegations and indicating possible legal action, the Police Service Commission says it intends to protect the credibility of the promotion system while reinforcing its commitment to due process.
