Nigeria’s newly appointed Inspector‑General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has launched a decisive security initiative in Kwara State, signaling a reinforced federal commitment to tackling banditry, kidnappings, and community displacement across the region. The operational visit, held on Monday, brought together police command officials, state authorities, and local stakeholders to coordinate strategies aimed at strengthening law enforcement and restoring public confidence in community safety.
Disu’s visit — his first official operational engagement in the state since assuming office underscores growing concerns over insecurity in parts of North‑Central Nigeria, where criminal networks and armed groups have disrupted daily life and forced mass displacements. Addressing officers and residents at the Kwara State Police Command in Ilorin, the IGP pledged that police and allied security agencies would reclaim communities overtaken by bandits and criminal elements, ensuring law-abiding citizens are no longer driven from their homes.
“I know Kwara and its challenges. I am here for an operation… criminals cannot chase us out of our towns,” Disu said, emphasizing that security forces would strengthen their presence and operational base across the state to protect lives, property, and civil order. He reiterated that displaced residents and law-abiding communities are the rightful stewards of their land and cannot be left at the mercy of violent gangs.
Highlighting the critical role of community cooperation, the police chief called for greater intelligence sharing and collaboration between citizens, traditional rulers, and security personnel. He also thanked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support and reaffirmed plans to improve police welfare and logistics to sustain an effective security offensive.
Disu’s commitments arrive amid escalating violence in Kwara and neighbouring states, where attacks linked to bandits and insurgent groups have caused mass casualties, abductions, and widespread fear among rural communities. In a particularly deadly incident in February 2026, militants killed scores of villagers in Woro and Nuku, highlighting the urgency for sustained security interventions.
Observers note that the federal government has faced mounting pressure to enhance its security posture nationwide, combining police initiatives with military operations to target both local bandits and broader extremist networks. Disu’s campaign in Kwara signals a potential recalibration of federal policing strategy, emphasizing operational presence, community engagement, and multi-agency collaboration.
The IGP’s visit is expected to be followed by expanded patrols, new police outposts, and enhanced intelligence operations to disrupt criminal logistics and dismantle bandit hideouts. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, support security efforts, and promote peaceful coexistence across diverse community groups.
