A 14-year-old Nigerian student, Oluwadamilola Adeolu, has emerged as the Junior Champion at the 2026 African Spelling Bee, held in Harare, Zimbabwe, signaling a historic achievement for Nigeria on the continental academic stage.

The competition, which featured top young spellers from over 30 African nations, concluded on March 20, with Adeolu standing out in the fiercely contested junior category. The African Spelling Bee Championship is a continent-wide initiative designed to promote literacy, critical thinking, and scholastic excellence. Participants are tested through progressively complex oral spelling rounds, combining speed, accuracy, and linguistic mastery.

Adeolu, who studies at St. Lawrence Metropolitan College in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, outperformed a highly competitive field through multiple rigorous stages, including rapid-fire spelling and traditional elimination rounds. Her triumph reflects both personal dedication and Nigeria’s consistent excellence in academic competitions across Africa.

Following the event, organisers lauded the strength of the Nigerian delegation. South Africa’s Ashton Singh finished second in the junior category, while another Nigerian, Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, claimed third place, reinforcing Nigeria’s dominant presence at the competition.

Team Nigeria’s overall performance was equally commendable, securing second place in the team rankings. Other standout members included Oghenetano Idoghor of Mountain Top Schools, Lagos; Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba; and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International School, Ilorin, highlighting the depth of talent nurtured across the country.

Adeolu’s victory represents the culmination of a steady ascent through both national and international spelling competitions. She previously placed second in the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, second in the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, fifth in the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and second in the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee. Her journey to continental success began with a first-place finish in the Ekiti State competition and continued with a strong runner-up performance at the national finals in Port Harcourt, securing her qualification for the African finals.

Experts and observers view the African Spelling Bee as a vital platform for nurturing Africa’s young intellectuals. The contest fosters literacy, cultural exchange, and academic discipline, bringing together national champions who exemplify the highest standards of academic achievement in their respective countries.

Adeolu’s win not only elevates her profile as one of Africa’s most promising scholars but also underscores the transformative power of structured academic competitions. Her success is expected to inspire greater participation across the continent and stimulate enhanced support for literacy-focused programs, strengthening the educational ecosystem for Africa’s youth.

As Nigeria celebrates this milestone, stakeholders are reflecting on how such achievements can drive broader educational development. The triumph of Adeolu and her peers demonstrates the importance of investing in youth-centered academic initiatives to maintain Nigeria’s competitive edge in regional and global intellectual arenas.
