Nigerian Students Petition Tinubu Over Alleged Diversion of 59 Government-Donated CNG Buses!

Nigerian students have formally petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for an urgent investigation into the alleged diversion of 59 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses originally donated by the Federal Government to support student transportation across the country.
The petition, reportedly backed by student leaders and stakeholders, raises concerns that the busesโpart of a broader federal intervention to ease transportation challenges following fuel subsidy reformsโwere not distributed transparently or equitably among intended beneficiaries. The students allege that some of the vehicles may have been diverted away from campuses, prompting calls for accountability and an independent probe.
The buses were part of the Federal Governmentโs clean-energy transport initiative designed to reduce commuting costs for workers and students through gas-powered mass transit systems. Under the programme, dozens of CNG buses were allocated to labour unions and the National Association of Nigerian Students to cushion the economic impact of rising fuel prices.
Student representatives argue that the alleged diversion undermines the policyโs core objective of providing affordable mobility within tertiary institutions. They insist that a transparent audit is necessary to determine the whereabouts of the buses and ensure they are deployed for student use as intended.
The petition also warns that unresolved concerns over the buses could erode trust in student leadership structures and public institutions. Some student leaders have urged the presidency and anti-corruption agencies to intervene to prevent further controversy and ensure fair access to government-funded transport initiatives.
Transport support for students has remained a major issue since the removal of fuel subsidies increased commuting costs nationwide, prompting the Federal Government to introduce CNG-powered buses as part of broader economic relief measures.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the presidency regarding the allegations. However, stakeholders say a prompt investigation would help clarify the situation and restore confidence in the initiative.
