Nigerian Government Begins Evacuation of Citizens from Iran Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions!

The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun the evacuation of willing Nigerian citizens from Iran, moving them across the border into Armenia as authorities respond to growing security concerns linked to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Officials confirmed that the operation is being coordinated by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working closely with diplomatic missions and relevant authorities to ensure the safe passage of Nigerians seeking to leave the country.

According to government sources, evacuees are being escorted in organized convoys to border crossing points between Iran and Armenia, where arrangements have been made to receive them before onward travel back to Nigeria. The initiative prioritizes vulnerable individuals, including students, families, and other residents who have indicated a willingness to return home.

The evacuation follows heightened regional tensions involving Iran and Israel, developments that have raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals across parts of the region. While there have been no confirmed reports of Nigerian casualties linked to the tensions, Nigerian authorities say the evacuation is a precautionary step aimed at safeguarding citizens abroad.

In a statement, the Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the protection of Nigerians worldwide, noting that embassies remain in constant contact with affected nationals to provide updates and logistical support throughout the evacuation process.

Diplomatic officials added that the government is coordinating with Armenian authorities to facilitate smooth border crossings and ensure temporary accommodation and documentation processes for evacuees before their onward movement.

The evacuation also reflects Nigeria’s broader consular protection framework, which has previously been activated during crises affecting Nigerians overseas, including conflicts, civil unrest, and humanitarian emergencies in different regions.

International media outlets including Reuters, BBC News, Al Jazeera, and The Guardian have similarly reported on escalating tensions across the Middle East and the precautionary steps taken by governments to secure their citizens abroad.

As the situation continues to evolve, Nigerian authorities say the evacuation process will remain voluntary, emphasizing that the government will continue monitoring developments while maintaining close communication with Nigerian nationals still residing in Iran.
