“Nigeria Was Heading for the Mortuary — Tinubu’s ‘Economic Surgery’ Brought It Back,” Says Minister!

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Kunle Salako, has defended the sweeping economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as a “radical surgery” that prevented Nigeria’s economy from collapsing.
Salako stated that the policy measures implemented under the current administration were necessary to stabilize the country’s fragile economic system, likening the reforms to an emergency medical procedure that saved a critically ill patient from being taken to the “mortuary.”
According to the minister, the government’s economic restructuring—though painful for many Nigerians—was essential to prevent a deeper fiscal crisis. His remarks echo similar positions by senior government officials who have argued that recent economic reforms, while difficult, are necessary to restore long-term stability.
Since assuming office in 2023, the Tinubu administration has introduced a series of economic measures, including the removal of fuel subsidies and broader fiscal adjustments. Government officials maintain that these policies are designed to correct structural imbalances, improve public finances, and attract investment, even as many citizens continue to face rising living costs.
Salako emphasized that the administration’s actions should be seen as unavoidable interventions rather than optional policy choices, warning that failure to act decisively could have led to a more severe economic downturn.
Economic analysts remain divided over the long-term impact of the reforms. While some experts argue that the policies could strengthen macroeconomic stability over time, others caution that prolonged hardship may worsen poverty levels if social safety nets are not strengthened.
The description of the reforms as “economic surgery” mirrors earlier government messaging portraying the policies as difficult but necessary steps toward national recovery and economic resilience.
