In a decisive move to protect agricultural communities and strengthen food security, Nigeria’s Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the deployment of 11,000 Agro-Rangers across the country. The initiative comes in response to a surge in violent attacks targeting farmers, which has heightened concerns over rural safety and national food supply.
The NSCDC, tasked with safeguarding critical infrastructure and vulnerable populations, emphasized that the Agro-Ranger program aims to provide direct protection for farmers, prevent criminal incursions, and curb the growing trend of armed attacks on farms. The personnel will be strategically stationed in high-risk farming areas, working closely with local authorities and community leaders to monitor and respond swiftly to threats.
A spokesperson for the NSCDC noted that the deployment is part of a broader national strategy to secure agricultural production and ensure the uninterrupted supply of food commodities. “Farmers are the backbone of our food security. Protecting their lives and livelihoods is a top priority,” the official said.
The deployment is also expected to serve as a deterrent to banditry and armed raids, which have increasingly targeted rural communities, leaving hundreds dead and causing significant economic losses. Security experts have highlighted that consistent protection and intelligence-led interventions are essential for sustainable agricultural development and rural stability.
President of the NSCDC, Habu Adamu, affirmed the Corps’ commitment to working with state governments, traditional leaders, and community vigilantes to create safe farming corridors and ensure rapid response to emergencies. The Agro-Rangers will also engage in community sensitization, helping farmers adopt preventive measures against attacks while fostering collaboration between civilians and security forces.
This deployment underscores Nigeria’s renewed focus on rural security, reflecting the government’s recognition that agricultural stability is critical to national development and the wellbeing of millions of Nigerians dependent on farming.
