The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered two significant drug trafficking attempts at major Nigerian entry points, arresting a woman who concealed tramadol in a fabricated pregnancy at the Seme border and an Ivorian national who later excreted dozens of cocaine pellets in Kano.
Fake Pregnancy Smuggling Attempt Foiled
NDLEA operatives said the female suspect was intercepted during routine profiling at the Seme border linking Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Officers reportedly became suspicious of the unusual pregnancy posture, prompting a search that revealed tramadol capsules carefully hidden inside a prosthetic baby bump.
The agency noted that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue to determine the origin and intended destination of the opioid consignment.
Ivorian National Arrested at Kano Airport
In a separate intelligence-led operation at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, NDLEA officers arrested an Ivorian traveller suspected of ingesting illicit drugs for trafficking.
According to the agency, the suspect was placed under observation after body scans indicated the presence of foreign objects. During excretion monitoring, the individual reportedly expelled 82 pellets of cocaine.
Officials said the arrest underscores the persistent use of internal concealment methods by transnational drug couriers operating through Nigerian airports.
NDLEA Warns Traffickers Amid Intensified Crackdown
The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening surveillance at borders and airports nationwide, warning that evolving smuggling tactics will continue to be met with improved intelligence and detection capabilities.
Security observers say the latest seizures reflect the agencyโs expanding focus on dismantling cross-border drug networks and curbing the flow of opioids and hard drugs into and through Nigeria.
Both suspects are expected to face prosecution following the conclusion of investigations.
