Late Cameroon Strike Stuns Super Falcons in Yaoundé Pre WAFCON Friendly!

Yaoundé, Cameroon Nigeria’s Super Falcons were narrowly defeated 1‑0 by the host Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a tightly contested pre Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) friendly on Saturday night. The decisive moment came courtesy of a stoppage time strike, delivering a sobering result for the 10‑time African champions.
The winning goal arrived deep into second half stoppage time when Mbomezomo Yvana capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire home, separating the sides after 90 minutes at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé.
This encounter marked the first of a scheduled double header between Nigeria and Cameroon as both nations intensify preparations for the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, scheduled to kick off on March 17. Despite controlling large portions of the match and probing the Cameroonian defense, the Super Falcons struggled to convert possession into clear goal scoring opportunities against a disciplined Lionesses side.
Tactical Build Up and Squad Dynamics
Head coach Justine Madugu fielded a blend of emerging talents and seasoned campaigners to assess squad depth and tactical flexibility. Goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor made her senior international debut, while midfield creativity was orchestrated by returning playmaker Ngozi Okobi Okeoghene, alongside experienced figures such as Rasheedat Ajibade.
Nigeria’s early pressure produced promising sequences, including sustained possession and attacking probes, but the Falcons were consistently repelled by Cameroon’s compact defensive structure. Second half substitutions introduced fresh legs, yet clear goal-scoring chances remained limited.
For Cameroon, the narrow victory provided a morale boost, highlighting resilience and effective game management in front of a vocal home crowd.
Looking Ahead
The second match of the friendly series is scheduled for Tuesday, offering coach Madugu and his squad an immediate opportunity to recalibrate and respond ahead of the continental showpiece. The result serves as a tactical checkpoint for Nigeria as they aim to reclaim the WAFCON title, while Cameroon’s late surge underscores the growing competitiveness among Africa’s elite women’s national teams.
