The Lagos Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has disbursed a total of ₦25 million to support students and vulnerable members of society in Lagos, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to social welfare and community development.
At the foundation’s recent disbursement event in Lagos, students emerged as the largest group of beneficiaries, receiving financial assistance aimed at easing the burden of tuition fees, academic materials, and other educational expenses. The initiative forms part of the foundation’s broader mission to promote education and reduce economic barriers among underserved populations.
Speaking at the ceremony, officials of the foundation explained that the funds were drawn from Zakat and Sadaqat contributions Islamic charitable donations collected from members of the Muslim community. According to the organisation, the programme is designed to ensure that donations reach those most in need, particularly students struggling to remain in school due to financial constraints.
Foundation representatives emphasised that investing in education remains one of the most sustainable ways to empower communities and foster long term socio economic development. They noted that by prioritizing students, the initiative helps nurture a generation capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s growth.
Beyond educational support, the disbursement also targeted widows, small scale entrepreneurs, and other economically disadvantaged individuals, providing them with financial relief and opportunities to rebuild livelihoods.
Community leaders present at the event praised the initiative, describing it as a practical demonstration of faith driven philanthropy that aligns with the principles of social justice and collective responsibility embedded in Islamic teachings.
The Lagos Muslim Community Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has, over the years, implemented various humanitarian programmes across Lagos, including scholarships, healthcare interventions, and poverty alleviation initiatives. Observers say such interventions are increasingly vital amid rising economic pressures affecting households across Nigeria.
Analysts note that faith based organisations continue to play a crucial role in complementing government social welfare programmes by mobilising resources and delivering targeted assistance to vulnerable populations.
