A woman has died while six other passengers sustained injuries following a tragic road accident along the Oworonshoki–Apapa Expressway in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, according to traffic authorities.

The fatal incident occurred near the New Castle Bus Stop inward Gbagada, when a commercial Volkswagen bus reportedly lost control and rammed into a roadside culvert. Officials said the force of the impact threw a female passenger out of the moving vehicle onto the busy highway.

Moments later, an oncoming articulated truck was unable to stop in time and ran over the passenger who had fallen onto the roadway, resulting in her immediate death.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
Authorities confirmed that six other occupants of the commercial bus including the driver sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some reportedly suffering fractures and other trauma.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene to manage the situation and assist victims. Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) secured the accident area to prevent further collisions and facilitate rescue operations.

The injured victims were transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, while the body of the deceased was evacuated by relevant authorities.

Authorities Renew Road Safety Warning
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

He also urged motorists particularly commercial bus operators to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, especially braking systems, to reduce the risk of preventable road accidents.

Road safety experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by poorly maintained commercial vehicles and heavy-duty trucks on major Nigerian highways. Accidents involving articulated trucks remain a persistent safety concern across several urban transport corridors in the country.

The latest incident highlights ongoing calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle safety standards and improved road discipline as Nigeria’s cities continue to experience rapid traffic growth.
