The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 33 villagers were killed following violent confrontations with suspected Lakurawa terrorists in the Biu district of Arewa Local Government Area, deepening security concerns in northwestern Nigeria.
In an official statement, the police said preliminary findings indicate the fatalities occurred after local residents engaged the armed group, triggering deadly reprisals that left dozens dead and several others injured.
Police Provide Details of the Incident
According to the command, the attack unfolded when suspected members of the Lakurawa terror network reportedly invaded communities in the Biu axis. Authorities said some villagers attempted to resist the assailants, leading to fierce clashes.
Police spokespersons noted that the situation escalated rapidly, resulting in significant casualties among the local population. Security operatives have since been deployed to the affected communities to restore calm and prevent further violence.
“The deaths recorded were linked to confrontations between the villagers and the suspected Lakurawa terrorists,” the command stated, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rising Insecurity in Northwestern Nigeria
The latest killings highlight persistent security challenges facing parts of northwestern Nigeria, where rural communities have increasingly come under attack from armed groups operating across porous border regions.
Security analysts warn that civilian resistance to heavily armed groups, while often driven by desperation, can escalate violence and expose vulnerable communities to severe reprisals.
Local authorities in Kebbi State have urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies rather than engaging armed groups directly.
Calls for Strengthened Protection
Community leaders and civil society groups have renewed calls for enhanced security presence in remote border communities, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained military operations against emerging terror networks.
As investigations continue, the police say efforts are underway to track down those responsible and prevent further attacks in Arewa Local Government Area and surrounding districts.
