In a solemn appeal to the Abia State Government, former Senate President and prominent political leader, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for the immortalisation of the late evangelist, Uma Ukpai, recognising his profound impact on Christianity in Nigeria and across Africa. Kalu’s call comes in the wake of Ukpai’s passing, a loss deeply felt by the religious community and faithful followers who have long celebrated his decades-long ministry.

Speaking during a memorial event honouring Ukpai’s life and contributions, Kalu described the evangelist as “a visionary leader whose dedication to spiritual growth and community development has left an indelible mark on generations of Nigerians.” He urged the Abia State Government to consider institutionalising Ukpai’s legacy through initiatives such as the establishment of a public memorial, naming of educational institutions, or cultural centers in his honour.

“Uma Ukpai was more than a preacher; he was a symbol of unwavering faith, moral courage, and societal transformation. It is only fitting that Abia State preserves his memory for posterity,” Kalu stated, emphasising the need for official recognition of Ukpai’s lifelong commitment to spreading the gospel.

The late evangelist, renowned for his evangelistic crusades and philanthropic activities, significantly shaped the Christian landscape in Nigeria. Ukpai’s ministries, which extended beyond the church, included initiatives in education, healthcare, and youth empowerment, reflecting his holistic approach to societal development. His contributions earned him admiration both domestically and internationally, drawing followers from multiple countries across Africa and the diaspora.

Kalu’s appeal resonates with a broader trend in Nigeria, where states and communities have increasingly sought to commemorate religious figures who have had transformative societal influence. Public recognition, he argued, not only honours the individual’s life but also serves as an enduring inspiration for younger generations to emulate virtues of leadership, service, and faith.

The Abia State Government has yet to officially respond to the recommendation, but the call aligns with the state’s cultural and religious ethos, which has historically supported initiatives celebrating notable figures in its history. Political analysts note that such recognitions carry both social and symbolic weight, reinforcing communal identity while highlighting the state’s commitment to preserving its heritage.

Religious leaders and community stakeholders have lauded Kalu’s proposal. Reverend Dr. Emmanuel Edeh, a leading figure in Christian education in the Southeast, described the initiative as “timely and appropriate,” stressing that immortalising figures like Ukpai can promote unity, moral integrity, and intergenerational mentorship within communities.

As discussions continue, advocates are proposing a multi-pronged approach, including a dedicated foundation, annual commemorative events, and the inclusion of Ukpai’s teachings in educational curricula, to ensure that his legacy transcends generational boundaries.

The call to immortalise Uma Ukpai underscores the enduring influence of spiritual leaders in shaping societal values in Nigeria and highlights the intersection of faith, culture, and governance in the country’s socio-political landscape.
