The Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State, northwestern Nigeria, has expelled 20 students and suspended 15 others after they were found guilty of examination malpractice during the 2024/2025 academic session, in what university authorities describe as a firm commitment to protecting academic integrity.
University officials confirmed that the disciplinary action followed the recommendations of the institution’s Senate disciplinary procedures after investigations into reported violations during semester examinations. The affected students were found to have engaged in various forms of examination misconduct, including unauthorized materials in examination halls, collusion, and other practices that contravene the university’s academic regulations.
According to the institution, the sanctions are part of broader efforts to uphold the credibility of degrees awarded by the university and to reinforce strict adherence to academic ethics among students.
In a statement issued by the university management, the disciplinary measures were described as consistent with the rules governing student conduct at the institution. The management stressed that examination malpractice undermines the integrity of higher education and damages the reputation of both students and academic institutions.
“Universities exist to promote merit, discipline, and intellectual development,” the statement noted. “Acts of examination malpractice contradict these principles and will not be tolerated.”
The expulsion of the 20 students represents the most severe penalty under the university’s disciplinary code, effectively terminating their academic enrollment. Meanwhile, the 15 suspended students will remain barred from academic activities for a defined period as determined by the institution’s Senate.
Education analysts say the move reflects growing efforts by Nigerian universities to confront examination malpractice—an issue long considered a major challenge within the country’s education sector. Institutions across Nigeria have increasingly adopted stricter surveillance, digital monitoring, and disciplinary enforcement to curb cheating during examinations.
The development at Federal University Dutse comes amid ongoing national discussions on improving the credibility and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s higher education system. Academic administrators argue that enforcing disciplinary measures is essential to maintaining trust in university qualifications.
While the university did not publicly disclose the identities of the affected students, it urged all members of the academic community to uphold ethical standards and comply with institutional regulations.
The administration further reiterated its commitment to fairness, due process, and transparency in handling disciplinary matters, noting that the investigations were conducted in accordance with established university procedures.
Across Nigeria’s university system, cases of examination malpractice have prompted stricter enforcement of academic rules by institutions and regulatory bodies such as the National Universities Commission, which oversees quality assurance in the country’s higher education sector.
Education stakeholders maintain that consistent enforcement of disciplinary policies remains crucial to preserving the credibility of academic qualifications and strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
