Tensions surrounding the escalating Middle East crisis have spilled into Africa after Israel’s ambassador to Nigeria accused Iran of sponsoring Islamist groups in Nigeria and across West Africa as part of what he described as a broader strategy to expand global terrorism.
Speaking during a televised interview, Israel’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, alleged that Tehran has been backing the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN)—a Shiite religious group—as part of a long-standing campaign to extend Iranian influence beyond the Middle East. According to the envoy, the alleged support forms part of Iran’s wider geopolitical agenda targeting Israel, the United States, and their allies worldwide.
Freeman claimed that Iran’s political system has, for decades, relied on the support of proxy movements and militant groups across different regions. He argued that such networks contribute to global instability and warned that Africa—particularly West Africa—could become a new theatre for geopolitical rivalry tied to the Iran–Israel confrontation.
The Israeli diplomat also linked recent protests in several Nigerian cities to broader ideological sympathies for Tehran amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Demonstrations by members and sympathisers of the IMN were reported in states including Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, and Bauchi following developments in the Iran–Israel crisis. Protesters carried placards and Iranian flags while condemning military strikes against Iran.
Security analysts say the protests reflect the growing global reverberations of the Middle East conflict, which has intensified following coordinated U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure earlier in 2026. The conflict has triggered diplomatic tensions, retaliatory military actions, and political demonstrations in several countries beyond the Middle East.
Islamic Movement Rejects Allegations
However, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has strongly rejected the Israeli envoy’s accusations. In a statement issued by its Media Forum, the organisation described the claims as “false and provocative,” insisting that the movement is not involved in terrorism or violent activities in Nigeria.
The group said the remarks could inflame religious tensions and argued that its activities over the past five decades have centred on religious advocacy and social mobilisation rather than militancy. It also urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as attempts to stigmatise the movement and its supporters.
Iran Denies Sponsorship Claims
Iran has also dismissed the allegations. Tehran’s ambassador to Nigeria described the accusations as “unfounded,” asserting that Iran maintains cordial diplomatic relations with Nigeria and other African countries based on cooperation in trade, education, and technology.
Iranian officials further argued that the claims are part of a wider propaganda campaign linked to geopolitical tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Africa’s Strategic Position in Global Geopolitics
The controversy highlights Africa’s growing importance in global geopolitical competition. Analysts warn that external rivalries—particularly those involving Middle Eastern powers—could increasingly intersect with domestic political and religious dynamics in African states.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and one of the continent’s largest economies, has long maintained diplomatic relations with both Iran and Israel while also facing complex internal security challenges from insurgent and extremist groups.
As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, observers say African governments may face mounting pressure to navigate delicate diplomatic balances while safeguarding domestic stability.
