Iran Declares Control of Strait of Hormuz as Middle East Conflict Intensifies and Oil Markets React!

Iran has declared that it has established “complete control” over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit corridor, as hostilities in the Middle East escalate following intensified military exchanges involving Iran and Israel.

The claim was made by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which warned that vessels attempting to pass through the narrow waterway could face threats from missiles or drones. The strait is one of the world’s most vital energy chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil and gas shipments passing through it daily.

Iranian officials said their naval forces now oversee activity across the waterway, signaling a potential disruption to international shipping and energy markets. The declaration comes amid an expanding regional conflict that has included airstrikes, retaliatory attacks, and heightened military deployments.

However, international observers and Western officials have challenged Tehran’s assertion, noting that military operations and countermeasures continue across the Gulf region. The United States has indicated it may deploy naval escorts for commercial tankers to ensure continued access to the route.

The escalating tensions have already triggered volatility in global energy markets. Oil prices surged and shipping activity slowed amid fears that prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could constrain global supply and intensify inflationary pressures worldwide.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and is widely regarded as one of the most strategically important maritime passages in the world. Any sustained disruption there could have far-reaching consequences for energy-importing regions, including parts of Africa that rely heavily on global fuel markets.

Diplomatic calls for restraint have continued, with international actors warning that further escalation could destabilize the wider Middle East and threaten global economic stability.
