Inferno Strikes Enugu Federal College of Education Exams Block Amid Sabotage and Corruption Claims!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi (journalist) | Sele Media Africa
A devastating fire engulfed the Exams and Records and Procurement offices at the Federal College of Education, Eha‑Amufu, late Monday, destroying vital academic archives and administrative records, sources confirmed.
The blaze spread rapidly to the building housing the Centre for Educational Technology, Governing Council Chambers, and the Integrated Science Laboratory. Eyewitnesses and staff noted that there was no active electricity supply or nearby vegetation burning when the fire began, raising suspicions that the incident may have been a deliberate act of sabotage.
Some college staff, speaking on condition of anonymity, linked the fire to ongoing petitions to Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) alleging mismanagement of institutional resources, including vehicles and funds. Sources suggest the timing of the fire coincides with internal efforts to hold accountable individuals implicated in financial misconduct.
A statement shared with media described the incident as “despicable,” expressing concern over the potential loss of students’ and alumni academic records. The fire raises pressing questions about the impact on transcript requests, degree verifications, and the institution’s accreditation status.
Attempts to obtain an official comment from the Provost, Dr. Pauline N. Ikwuegbu, were unsuccessful as of press time. The Enugu State Fire Service has yet to issue a definitive report on the origin and cause of the blaze.
The college’s governing council, alongside community stakeholders, has been urged to initiate an immediate, transparent investigation to secure remaining records and restore confidence in the institution. Experts warn that failure to act decisively may exacerbate administrative vulnerabilities and erode public trust.
This fire highlights ongoing challenges in governance and transparency within Nigeria’s federal tertiary education sector, emphasizing the need for rigorous oversight and systemic reform to safeguard institutional integrity.
