IGP Disu Vows Strict Police Neutrality Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections, Warns Officers Against Partisanship!

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged that the Nigeria Police Force will maintain strict neutrality during the country’s 2027 general elections, warning officers against political bias, misconduct, or actions capable of undermining democratic credibility.
The assurance comes amid growing national conversations about electoral integrity and security preparedness ahead of what is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most competitive electoral cycles since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Police Leadership Emphasizes Professional Conduct
Speaking during a high level engagement with senior police officers and electoral stakeholders, the Inspector General stressed that the force would operate strictly within constitutional mandates, ensuring equal protection for all political actors regardless of affiliation.
Disu underscored that professionalism, discipline, and impartial law enforcement would guide policing operations before, during, and after the elections. He warned that any officer found engaging in partisan activities, voter intimidation, or electoral malpractice would face immediate disciplinary action.
According to him, safeguarding democratic processes remains a core responsibility of the police, particularly in a politically sensitive period where public trust in institutions is critical.
Zero Tolerance for Electoral Misconduct
The police chief reiterated a “zero tolerance” policy toward misconduct, emphasizing that security personnel must avoid being used as instruments of political influence. He noted that election security deployments would prioritize citizen safety, protection of electoral materials, and peaceful participation.
Analysts say such assurances are significant given past concerns raised by civil society groups and election observers regarding alleged security interference in previous electoral cycles.
By reinforcing neutrality early, the police leadership aims to strengthen confidence among voters, political parties, and international observers monitoring Nigeria’s democratic process.
Strengthening Electoral Security Frameworks
The Nigeria Police Force is expected to collaborate closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies to coordinate election security strategies nationwide.
Experts argue that inter agency cooperation, improved officer training, and adherence to electoral laws will be essential in preventing violence, vote suppression, and post election disputes.
Nigeria’s 2027 elections will determine leadership across federal and state levels, making security preparedness a central pillar of democratic stability in Africa’s most populous nation.
Public Confidence and Democratic Stability
Political observers note that early commitments to neutrality can help reduce tensions and discourage electoral violence, particularly in regions historically affected by political rivalry.
Disu called on citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies while urging officers to uphold professionalism and respect human rights throughout the electoral period.
The police leadership maintains that credible elections depend not only on political actors but also on the conduct and integrity of security institutions tasked with maintaining order.
