A tragic road accident in Ibadan on Wednesday claimed the lives of three passengers after a bus carrying eight people lost control and plunged into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road, according to emergency officials.

Authorities confirmed that five passengers were rescued alive from the wreckage following a rapid response by emergency teams and local residents who rushed to the scene shortly after the crash occurred.

Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the commercial passenger vehicle lost control while travelling along the busy Amuloko corridor, causing the bus to veer off the roadway and plunge into the river. The impact left the vehicle partially submerged, complicating rescue operations.

Emergency responders and volunteers worked swiftly to pull survivors from the water, while the bodies of three victims were later recovered. The rescued passengers were reportedly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Officials have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims as authorities continue efforts to notify their families.

Road safety experts say the accident highlights persistent concerns about road safety and vehicle control on Nigeria’s urban and intercity roads, where infrastructure challenges, driver fatigue, and speeding remain key factors in many crashes.

According to data from the Federal Road Safety Corps, road traffic accidents continue to pose a significant public safety challenge across the country, with thousands of fatalities recorded annually.

Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
Incidents involving vehicles plunging into rivers or drainage channels are not uncommon in parts of southwestern Nigeria, particularly during periods of heavy traffic and poor road visibility. Safety advocates have repeatedly called for improved road infrastructure, better driver training, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to reduce such tragedies.

Local authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving along river-adjacent routes and to strictly observe traffic safety rules.
